The City of Alabaster is a wonderful place to raise a family. That is why more and more residents have flocked to Alabaster, making it, by far, the largest city in Shelby County. Population figures put Alabaster’s population at close to 25,000. Alabaster has become a well-rounded community with a wide variety of entertainment, recreation and retail. That makes Alabaster a great place to live and do business.
Alabaster is proud to welcome The Colonial Promenade, a retail community offering a vast selection of shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and more. The Colonial Promenade is located on Highway 31 at Interstate 65.

The City of Alabaster hosts one of the largest annual public gatherings in Shelby County. CityFest, which was started to celebrate Alabaster’s 50th birthday in 2003, has grown into one of the most popular celebrations in our area. With thousands of visitors attending the celebration, CityFest features live music, a large children’s area with games, rides and other fun activities. Many vendors also set up during the celebration to sell merchandise and food items. This annual event is sponsored by several corporate donors in the community.
Ever since the City of Alabaster was incorporated in 1952, its residents have been protected by the Alabaster Fire Department. The Department, now known as the Alabaster Fire and Rescue Service, started as a volunteer unit and continued in that capacity until 1974 when the City employed its first paid fire fighter, John Cochran. Cochran served as Alabaster’s Fire Chief until he retired in October 2003. Chief Frank Matherson was appointed as the new Fire Chief in February 2004.
The Department has experienced tremendous growth under Chief Matherson's leadership. 15 full-time firefighters have been added since 2004, in addition to, a full-time Fire Inspector, Fire Marshal and a Public Education Officer. The Department also filled the position of Deputy Fire Chief and three Battalion Chiefs.
Presently the Department is serving over 30 square miles of territory out of three fire stations. The Alabaster Fire & Rescue Service is staffed with 57 full-time personnel. AFRS is one of a few fire departments in the state of Alabama whose minimum staffing on each apparatus is four personnel. This high number of personnel allows the Department to deliver high quality service in emergency situations.
Alabaster Fire and Rescue Service is home to Alabama's only fire department based bagpipe and drum band. The Alabaster Firefighters Pipes and Drums is a newly organized unit made up entirely of full-time firefighters from the Department. The band was organized to honor fallen firefighters, promote the brotherhood and spirit of the fire service, and serve as ambassadors for the City of Alabaster, the Alabaster Fire and Rescue Service, and the Professional Firefighters of Alabama.
The City of Alabaster is fortunate to have Shelby County’s largest medical facility located in the heart of downtown. The Shelby Baptist Medical Center, which has 24 hour medical service, has grown along with the community over the years. In addition to the many other services the hospital provides, it recently marked a milestone with the opening of a new cancer treatment center and the performance of open heart surgeries. The hospital has become a medical hub for the tri-county area with an increasing number of patients from Shelby, Chilton and Bibb Counties.
